This is probably one of the most awkward videos I have ever seen, but this song is money.  Duck Sauce comes out with some great stuff to move to.

If my life could look like any music video… I would want it to look exactly like this.

It’s like a J Crew/Ralph Lauren catalogue come to life.  PERFECT.

The Head and the Heart

“A year from now we’ll all be gone, all our friends will move away.  And they’re going to better places, but our friends will be gone away.  Nothing is as it has been, and I miss your face like hell.  And I guess it’s just as well, but I miss your face like hell.  Been talking bout the way things change, and my family lives in a different state.  And if you don’t know what to make of this then we will not relate.  Rivers and roads, rivers and roads, rivers ‘til I reach you.”

It’s been quite some time since I have fallen in love instantly with a new album, but The Head and the Heart has me all tingly and warm inside.  The six band-mates are all in their twenties and are originally from Seattle.  According to NPR, they all met randomly about a year and a half ago at an open mic night at a bar in town and hit it off due to their love of folk music.

One of the many reasons why I’m loving this band so much is because of their lyrics.  I like my folk music to encompass thoughts of love, life, family, friends, seasons, and anything else that pulls at the heart strings.  The Head and the Heart creates a beautiful array of emotions through their lyrics, and with their sweet and gentle musicality listeners can’t help but take a deep breath and feel completely at ease.  They sing about leaving home, moving on with life, missing friends and loved ones, and heartache in a magical way and it’s through these pictures they create that make this band so down-to-earth and relatable.

Their self-titled album was just released in January and I’m being completely honest when I say I adore each and every song.  It has a perfect indie blend of piano, guitar, and drums on top of catchy folky harmonies.  The first four tracks off the album are more upbeat than the rest of the album that ends with the emotionally proclaim “Heaven Go Easy On Me.”  My favorite tracks are “Down In The Valley,” “Rivers And Roads” (the lyrics at the beginning of this post), and “Lost In My Mind.”

Check. Them. Out.  Lovely music and heart-felt lyrics.  I truly cannot get enough.

Urban Dreams #3 (8tracks Playlist)

I believe there is peace in the chaos of our wild city landscape. The city is one of the few places you can be alone while surrounded by people, a place where you can always find a venue to channel your tranquil vibes. The mixture of…

These are all amazing songs.  I love this.

Friends: Not just the name of a show anymore

Friends, a band from Bushwick, is definitely an up and coming act and has been called a “Band to Watch” by Stereogum this week.  I had the pleasure of seeing Friends open for Darwin Deez back in February, and I was pleasantly surprised to watch this seemingly unknown group perform such innovative and fun music.  In my post about the Darwin Deez show I mentioned that I wanted to find out more information on Friends… and now I finally have!  It’s as if the music world discovered them at the same time as I did at that show at the Bowery because their name is most definitely getting out there now.

Friends’ first single, “Friend Crush,” was just released two weeks ago by their UK based label, Lucky Number, and their full length is expected to be released this summer.  I’m super excited because as Stereogum mentioned, this music is perfect for the summer.  Friends incorporates a plethora of sounds and styles into their music but the overall tone is tropical and dancey with a hint of the 80s.  They look and sound like they’ve come out of Bushwick, but I can’t complain because the trends coming out of that area of Brooklyn are growing in popularity amongst the artsy and hipster communities.  These are the people really willing to take interesting risks in what they create, and I’m excited to see what else Friends has in store for music listeners.

This “Friend Crush” single is incredibly catchy… I think I’ve had the guitar part stuck in my head since listening to it at my interning office on Monday.  It has the perfect amount of grunge to it on top of being poppy.  Samantha Urbani’s voice is tantalizing as she sings, “I wanna be your friend,” and the lyrics she has written clearly express desiring someone who you don’t know very well.  That’s something I would assume we can all relate to!

Check out “Friend Crush” on the Lucky Number website.  You won’t regret it!

Travis Barker’s new album entitled, Give The Drummer Some, is out of control.  How could you expect anything less from the drummer of Blink 182?  Barker’s solo album combines everything that makes an album popular— intense drumming, catchy beats, fun lyrics, and collaborations with 20+ of the hottest hip-hop artists out there right now.  Barker has always been known to be one of the most talented drummers in the music world but this album takes his musicality to a whole new level.  Once a strictly punk-rock performer, the now combination of rock with hip-hop gives Barker’s new stuff a completely new spin that makes it much more accessible to different music listeners.  These are the kinds of tracks you want to blast at a party, in your car, or in your headphones while at the gym.  I can’t get enough.
This album proves that hip-hop isn’t going as down hill as everyone thinks it is.  Barker’s rock twist on hip-hop shows that mash ups of genres really bring new intensity to music, and getting so many amazing artists together on one album is rarely done.  Barker clearly has an amazing representation in the music world and is well respected by artists of all genres.  I’m hoping to begin hearing this album everywhere, and when Blink comes out with new stuff they should try to incorporate Barker’s genius into their album.
Favorite tracks: “If You Want To,” “Let’s Go,” “Cool Head,” “Just Chill”
Check out “Just Chill” featuring Beanie Sigel, Bun B, & Kobe HERE.
